: I have been playing bass a few years now and have always enjoyed jamming with my friends, but my guitarist is able to make very sophisticated recordings and we have also been able to get a few gigs. All of the people in my band have good gear. I am a pretty descent player, but my gear just does not do me justice. I don't have alot of money at all...if I wanted the most change in my sound for the better, would it be a better idea to invest in a new bass or a new amplifier (given that my present bass and amp are of comparable quality)?
I'm not very knowleagable about this stuff, but my experience was that I had low quality amp & bass to learn on. I was not happy with the sound quality at all. I took my bass to have a jack socket repaired, and played it through the shops amp to check it. It sounded great! So, in my limited experience the amp has a greater part to play than the bass.
How about taking your bass into a shop to look at some amps and try them with your own bass; that will give you a good idea which to change.
