: Hi Doug. It's hard to describe the sound of a Precision or Jazz bass. The trademark Precision sound is often described as a 'bark' or 'growl. It is certainly more gutteral. If you want to hear a Precision in 'full-on-growl-mode' listen to Steve Harris' playing with the British Metal band, Iron Maiden. Steve's sound is 100% Precision.
: The Jazz is a much more complex animal. Using just the neck pick-up produces a passable, Precision-like 'honk', but mix in the neck pick-up and you get the classic 'Jazz' tone. For a good idea of how a Jazz can sound, although the tonal qualities of both players vary quite a lot, listen to any recordings by Marcus Millar and Jaco Pastorious.
: I hope this has been of some use to you. I've played many basses over the pass twenty years, but I seem to find that no matter what the pick-up combination on the bass I'm playing at the time, I always sound like me!
