Sometimes you may find yourself humming random tunes to yourself, if you can remember these and make them into real music this can sometimes work. If you are trying to create a riff to fit with a guitar riff then the pentotonic scale can come in handy find out what the first note/chord the guitarist plays (tonic/root note) and create a line using its pentotonic scale. Otherwise you could just play the root note once at the start of each bar or continuosly through the bar, although this can get boring. By the way when using the pentotonic scale you can always atart of using the reletive minor rather than the root not (4 frets from the root note).
