EL PARIAH - sometimes having a limited time period to practice really MAKES you focus. I work a day job, but I play generally 3 or 4 gigs a week, have at least one session + my day gig + practicing. So I need to stay very focused for my practice time, since it's generally only an hour.
Knowing precisely what time I am gonna practice, exactly WHAT I am gonna practice, and exactly how much time I am gonna allot to each segment of what I am working on is what makes the difference. Now sure, it's not the same as some guy who's practicing 4 hours a day, playing a session in the afternoon and gigging every night. But it keeps me moving deeper into the music. AND it's so much better than spending 4 or 5 hours every Saturday trying to get through stuff or spending alla my practice time playing stuff I already know.
My day gig is what I do to pay the rent. It also keeps me from having to do alla the stupid gigs I don't want to do with alla the people I don't want to play with. It also insures that I don't have to turn down a gig I want to do to take one that pays more money. Music is what I do to keep centered.
