: Ok, here's my problem. I've been playing for a year - year and a half and I want to play in a band. Now, I know NONE that is in a band, and I am not particularly good at playing yet. I can't read, I can't just improvise with music. I barely know where the notes are on the fretboard (Huge mistake not learning this from day 1... I was to lazy to learn, but man do I regret that)
Mark, you have hit the nail on the head here. To move ahead, work on fingerboard familiarity. Play and say the name of each note all 12 frets of EACH string. You will be surprised at how quick it comes. You will also start ot see some of the important patterns that repeat.
: Now, if I put out an add or something in the local musicstore the people answering it will probably expect me to read...or at least be able to improvise some.
Just be honest about your abilities and ambitions with prospective bands. Go for it!!
