: Hey there, fellow bassateers... Now this may sound strange, I'm not a tech head at all, I hardly even know how to plug the jack cable into my amp, but here goes... I play a 5-string Yamaha (BBN5), and it has three knobs on the body. There's two for the neck and bridge pickups, but I have no clue about the third... It's the one most far away from the neck. The problem is that nothing happens when i turn it, the sound stays the same. I got the bass a couple of years ago, and it didn't work by then either... By then I was completely new to the bass, so I did not think much about it, I had enough trouble trying to play the damn thing... Haven't paid the knob much attention since, until a couple of hours ago, that is... So, anybody who knows what purpose it has? Any good reason I should pay a lot of money to fix it? The bass sounds great, I haven't had any problems with it because of this, but it would be interesting to know what I have missed... Ok, hope to hear from you. Peace.
: BTW, nice to see you back, Alfonso!

What's up man? Long time since you last posted...
Anyway, judging by your description, your bass is more likely a passive one. Thus, the third knob you talk about is more likely to be a passive tone control, which acts as a treble roll-off (when turned all the way up, there's no effect on the sound; when turned all the way down, it cuts the highs). Try it and see if it does what I said ....I might be wrong.
Buena suerte and keep that bass up front in the mix,
