The clicking might be due to your string hitting the pickup. This means either your strings are too low or your pickups are to high.
It's probably not that your technique is crappy but more like your technique is not right for the way your bass is set up. The solution is to set it up different. I tend to play very hard and hence have my action set up quite high. Some people who play my bass don't like it, but they all agree it works for me.
There's a very simple definition for the "right" bass technique. If you enjoy the sounds coming out of your bass and the people listening to you enjoy them, then you are playing the bass right - and never let anyone else tell you otherwise.
