Hi,

I would bet the C string would be too floppy.

I was a cellist myself before switching to the electric bass. It was a long time ago but I don't remember there being any problem switching from 5ths to 4ths. In fact playing an instrument tuned in 4ths is a lot easier becuase you can play most scales without shifting when you get out of first position.

It is certainly worth giving the 5ths a try, but you'll probably want to learn the standard tuning anyway at somepoint. Don't forget there's a lot of music written in tablature which will useless to you if you use an alternative tuning.

Good luck and enjoy. I've never regretted making the switch.

Bob
