: Hello Guys!

: I recently have been turned on to the bass guitar and have decided to purchase one to begin learning to play. Currently, I play acoustic steel string guitar and jam unplugged with friends on mainly folk music. Could I please ask you guys for advice on what kind of bass guitar to start on? I have looked at both electric bass and acoustic bass (not the upright kind but the guitar-type). Is an acoustic bass guitar more difficult to play for a beginner? Thanks for your advice.
Yeah. I would go for what YOU CAN AFFORD in whatever scale neck you like best and make it an electric. Sounds like that is what you want. If you can do with the accoustic bass guitar, well great, but for me it had limited applications. You will be glad if you can get into a decent new or used instrument with an amp with a 15" speaker and at least 150 watts, you can jamm and play some small rooms and not break your back. Don't spend more than you can really afford, then, if possible, WORK your way into your next instrument, otherwise you'll end up like some of us who have spent thousands on equipment because we thought we'd find better girlfriends or whatever and all you will have earned will have been a thousand bucks or so and partied alot. An experience of being able to sustain and accurately cut off notes such as when bowing an instrument is invaluable and really important and it will let you acquire a better feel for what bass lines that are tasty really do and how they should compliment the music. Good Luck. Learn to read!! and jamm, both together can get you a good ways towards developing your own style. enough and later.
