: Hello, I just recently bought my first Bass amp about 2 weeks ago. It was none other than the Hartke 4000 head with 4x10 Hartke speakers. I was basically wondering what I should set my knobs to so I can get the best sound out of it. I am really shaky on the EQ of it and all that. I am wondering because when i practice with my band, my amp tends to carry the lows well, but seems to get lost in the highs when the guitars kick in. If it helps, I play with a 4 string Ibanez 800 with active pickups. Any suggestions or web sites to visit will help me greatly. thanks for your time

You've probably figured this out already. There are two inputs to this amp. If you plug an active pickup bass into the wrong one it will sound really bad. The high end will over drive and get lost. If this is your problem try the other input as it is designed for active pickups.

I've used this amp when I play at my friends studio. I've played with the knobs quite a bit and have never been able to get a live sound that I've been happy with. However, the recordings pretty much always sound good.

Since you have a lot more time to play with yours, I suggest turning the EQ of and try to get a roughly good sound with the bass and treble knobs. Once you get there set the EQ flat turn it on and work from there.

It's tough to recommend settings to anyone as we all want a different sound and there are variations in the kind of bass and playing style. All I can suggest is being very systematic about trying different things.

I hope this helps.
