I'd say that more than anything else, it would depend on what *kind* of pickups you were dealing with.

For example, compare the old Gibson EB-0 and EB-3; the 3 is *much* more flexible, simply because the big Gibson bass pickup has such a deep tone. For that, having 2 pickups would probably be better.

On the other hand, the P-Bass works well with only one pickup.

So there's not really any one hard and fast answer.
