: hey. I'm looking into getting a new amp and im running across all these articles on preamps... what exactly does a pre-amp do compared to an amp?

Z Dawg,
If you have a regular amplifier (combo or head), it's actually 2 amplifiers in one; the preamp and the power amp.

A preamp takes the signal from the pickup - which is a *very* weak signal - and boosts the level of the signal so that it can be effectively filtered by the tone controls, etc.

A power amp takes the signal from the preamp (and any tonal-filtering stages) and boosts it to a level that will produce a signal that will drive the speakers sufficiently.

Back in the 80's, manufacturers started making modular components - preamps and power amps - separately, so that a user could mix and match, depending on personal preference.

Does that explain things for you?
