: I'm looking for a small bass combo (8" / 10" / 12"). It shouldn't be heavy but i need enough power (120W min.) I've heard that Gallien Krueger and EBS combos are quite good, but they are too expensiv...(The combo shouldn't cost more than $500) Is a 12" speaker enough for a 6 String?

Toby, you have to judge each amp for yourself by hearing them live, but, all other things being equal, a 15" speaker will reproduce the low b-string with
more fullness. This doesn't mean a 10 or a 12 can't do it, just that the rule
of thumb for speakers is: larger = fuller for bass. The same goes for all
speakers, you can't judge them just by written specs, just as you can't judge
someone's personality just by their face. My recommendation would be a Fender
Bassman 100. It's got 1x15, 100watts and a nice warm tone. Kinda like the 60s
Fender amps, if that's the kind of tone you're looking for, and it streets for
about $500.00. Carvin makes a 160watt amp with 1x15, but, I've never heard it
live, so I can't honestly recommend it. I've heard one of their big amps and it
sounded pretty good so I'd assume the apple wouldn't be far from the tree.
Live, you must hear them live.
