: : I'm looking for a small bass combo (8" / 10" / 12"). It shouldn't be heavy but i need enough power (120W min.) I've heard that Gallien Krueger and EBS combos are quite good, but they are too expensiv...(The combo shouldn't cost more than $500) Is a 12" speaker enough for a 6 String?
: : Thanks

: Toby, you have to judge each amp for yourself by hearing them live, but, all other things being equal, a 15" speaker will reproduce the low b-string with
: more fullness. This doesn't mean a 10 or a 12 can't do it, just that the rule
: of thumb for speakers is: larger = fuller for bass. The same goes for all
: speakers, you can't judge them just by written specs, just as you can't judge
: someone's personality just by their face. My recommendation would be a Fender
: Bassman 100. It's got 1x15, 100watts and a nice warm tone. Kinda like the 60s
: Fender amps, if that's the kind of tone you're looking for, and it streets for
: about $500.00. Carvin makes a 160watt amp with 1x15, but, I've never heard it
: live, so I can't honestly recommend it. I've heard one of their big amps and it
: sounded pretty good so I'd assume the apple wouldn't be far from the tree.

: Live, you must hear them live.

Hey...I just remebered about that carvin...I had the chance to borrow one for a couple of weeks...it was really nice. easy tone shaping, not too large (albeit a bit bigger than my DB-500) and a 15 that really got down. pleny of power, and they are relativley inexpensive. If you live in the LA area, they are a must check out....and if not, at least keep them on your list.
