If you want a good bass and dont want to spend a bunch, try hitting the street ads and picking up a good bass for cheap, for example you can pick up a mexican Fender for like 250 this you cant go wrong with its not of american quality but still has plenty of tone, there are various instruments you can market, I myself like the upper sr1200 ibanez etc, but thats me.. For you "newbie=ness" you will want to stay fretted. fretless will limit you optional playing techniques otherwise available to your apprenticeship.
Check around until you feel comfortable with a basses feel in your hands, regardless of brand..
Good Luck,
Peace and chicken grease,
