: My bass has a P and J pickups. This may sound dumb but what does that mean???
: I'm just asking for a list of differences especially if there is any other
: style of pickups available that I overlooked.
: Still learnin' about bass,
Ok, the "P" pickup is a standard Precision Bass pickup; it's the one that has 2 small pieces.
The "J" pickup is a standard Jazz Bass pickup; it's the slender bar-shaped one.
The P Bass pickup is a humbucker, which means that it will tend to have a deep, full tone; by contrast, the J Bass pickup is a single-coil, which gives it a brighter, more focused tone.
Generally, when the two are combined, the P-Bass pickup will be in the regular P-bass position, and the J Bass pickup will be in the regular position for the bridge pickup on the Jazz Bass.
Good combination. :-)
Hope that helps!
