Hi there,
Skippy already told you the basics, so I'll answer the last part of your question.
Perhaps the one style of pickup you don't know about is the one that's called a soapbar. As the name implies, theses are rectangular shaped cases with (generally) a double-coil pickup inside them.
Other differences abuot pickups ...well, you have ceramic vs. alnico, passive vs. active, magnetic vs. piezo, optical, and the list of options goes on. There's a bunch of information out there about every one of them (I'd recommend a visit to the sites of Bartolini, Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, etc.).
