: I was talking with a fellow bassist just recently and we were talking about how you can spot immediately if a guitarist is playing a bass. If somebody is really good with a guitar he naturally is quite good on bass but there's something that reveals that he's not a bassist. It lacks something really essential to bass playing. Am I making any sence?

The funniest thing is watching some guitar noodler try to blow you away on a bass and not have the finger strength to properly fret the notes. I do not think that a guitarist will automatically be good at bass either. I do think that bassists have a natural advantage if for some unknowable reason they decide to pick up a guitar- do to the hand strenght they develop playing bass and the theory one needs to write good bass parts to other music. I think it's an easier transition. -B
