I'm kinda partial to the horns and tweeters cause I am a heavy slapper, but I must admit that there are times when I would give my left leg for a big, beefy Ampeg SVT 8x10 or one of those beastly JBL 2x18s. My current setup sports an SWR SM-500 powering a Goliath 4x10 speaker with a horn. The sound is good, except for when I turn the treble and transparency up, then things get nasty. The noise from the horn is unbareable, and slapping is torture. Whenever I want a good slap tone, or something that requires a lot of high end, I don't fool with the amplifier. In fact, I keep the transparency and the treble at 12:00 no matter what venue I play. I usually rely on the Bartolini 18V EQ on my Roscoe to boost the treble enough to give me a nice crisp slap tone.
The horn does help, but you might want to fool around with your EQ on your bass and your amp so that the extra noise doesn't come out (or at least doesn't come out as much). You might try boosting the mids a bit too.
