: can a Fender Jazz bass be used to play metal? I guess what I'm really asking is, are those 2 J pickups suitable for metal tones? I've seen some other basses with one J and one P and another bass with two P pickups

Steve,
There's no reason you *can't* use a J-Bass for metal; in between the pickups and the amp, you should be able to dial in a tone that's at least reasonably close to what you're looking for.

: I'm a little confused on which pickup configuration to go for

Short Answer: Get the one that works for you.

Slightly Longer Answer: It really depends on how flexible of a bass you *need*; if you could get by with a P-Bass, that would work, but I'd really kinda recommend something like the combination of a P-Bass pickup in the mid position and a J-bass pickup in the bridge position for greatest flexibility.

: many thanks

Hope that helps!

-Bob
