: For years I played with a 45 watt 15in combo, but I like to have distorted tone so this might not work for you. Recently I bought a 200 watt combo and have been pretty happy with it though I rarely put it up past 4 or 5.
: I'm not sure that the bigger is better line is right. I have had occassions to use big 350 and 400 watt amps and I found that when you turn them down too much they loose their tone. I think the reason this happens is that speakers not only have a maximuim rating but also a minimium rating, below which they are not driven correctly. A big amp needs powerful speakers and there not going to function correctly if you turn the amp down too much. I would also guess that when you turn a big amp down too much its not going to produce all of those nice harmonics that are so much a part of a good sound.
: I may be all wet on this, so I'll gladly defer to those who more knowledgable.

I would say you're right on about about the problems with really powerful systems, in my band we all are between 100 and 150 watts on our gear and we can fill a small bar with plenty of sound. The real problem with the huge amps in my opinion is to get that cherry tone your want you generally have to turn them up to around 50% power at least. Thats great and all for some people but if you have neighbors where you practice it sort of makes it tough to get the sound you want while practicing. Plus amps of that size in a small to medium bar often means you can't turn it up to get the sound you want or the bar manager will get in a huff and unplug you (of course it all depends on the dive your playing in).
