I would just like to add to this comment that I was guitarist for many years and then decided to take up bass because a shortage of them and because I could not really handle the ego of many guitarist who thought the stage was built just for them. Beside that you speak about the 1/2 finger picking that "new/ex guitarist" players use, well then why is it that a professional bass tutor who has played and still plays in a regular unit every week and also does session work has taught me that this is the most important part of playing bass, because this is what gives you and the drummer the rythym to keep the timing and the whole thing going. Many professional players would laugh at your attitude to playing well with the 1/2 finger method as this method is very hard to accomodate at all levels, I am of course not talking about slap bass of which I am not proficient but just basic bass playing. Good to see so many opinions on this site as it helps you to really get the gut feeling regarding attitudes about and within the bass players fraternity
