With all due respect to the previous poster, I think it is much better to adjust your J-bass pickups and strings so that you have approximately 1/8 inch space between bottom of string and top of pole pieces. Many experts have recommended doing it this way (I'm no expert, I just repeat stuff!).

: : I play a Fender Jazz and would like to know what height the pickups should be adjusted to,to get the best out, tone wise. Also,is it better to turn volume up on the bass or the amp volume to get the tone/volume I want? The amp I use is a Ampeg sv4(oldie but goodie).Or is it a combination of using bass/amp volumes together?

: Hei Andy,
: There's different possibilities here but a quick advice would be: Put the pick-up as high as possible without letting it touch the strings while you play. You'll here a click everytime a string touches the pick-up.
: The bass volume makes a difference to your sound so experimenting will be in order here.
