: I play a peavey foundation 5 string. I have moved into a phase of playing really fast punk stuff, usually using a pick. Now when i get into playing 16th notes or faster it starts to sound sloppy. It seems to me compared to other basses my strings are loose as hell. Is there any way to tighten the strings and achieve a faster playing speed while getting rid of that sloppy noise? hard vs flexible pick? string adjustment? help me out here guys, I dont really know all that much. (oh yeah, i play with earnie ball strings. I also use standard tuning so there really is no reason for the strings to seem loose.)

Hello there,
If you can't afford to get a 35" scale lenght bass, try heavier strings. They should feel tighter, but the drawback (there's always one!) is they will be less flexible and therefore intonation may go out the window easily.
Other than that, my experience with thinner picks was very successful: I was able to get a better sound (the bottom end is still there) and better articulation. Try one of them and hear by yourself. Buena suerte and keep your bass up front in the mix,

El Pájaro
