: : : : : : i've got a GK 400rb ... i kicks butt. but i'm seeing a whole tonne of negative stuff going on about GK in general. when i bought i asked very reliable sales, friends and fellow bassists ... all said that GK was one of the best ... what are the problems that you guys know about?
: : : : : : i do have on thing ... the top handle, was mounted on the air vent for the fan, and the grill's screws popped out ... not a big deal, it's got handles on the sides.
: : : : : They do sound great thats true, and I've seen them last forever, but mine didn't. I had a 400rb that came new with a screwy preamp stage. Over the course of six months and tons of frustration, I was not able to get it fixed by any of the authorized service places that I tried. I was told that I was lucky it was under warranty because the cost of repairing it would be ridiculously high. I eventually spoke to Richard Krueger, who was polite but not helpful. The nice folks at guitar center finally just refunded my the total price towards the trace elliot I use now. The whole thing left me sour on GK, but like I said, they normally sound great. -B

What was GK thinking when they designed the 700 and 800 biamp heads. The
Woofer amp is 4 ohms. The mid highs is 8 ohms. Most low end cabs are 8 ohms
so you can only get half the amp power available to them. Most, not all, 2-10 cabs,
are 4 ohm. They can't be run on the 8 ohm circuit which is why I never looked any further at them! Screwy design.
: : : so basically, if my amp screws up ... i'm screwed? theres no one around that would fix it? (i live in BC, canada)
: : Not necessarily, you can call GK and find a sevice tech, I just had a really bad experience with them. Hopefully your amp will last like most GK's do. I just think it's good to consider everything (GK headquarters lack of help when the tech's failed miserably) when buying a new amp. When mine was out for service for HALF A YEAR I borrowed an ancient 800rb more often than anything else. -B
: i wouldn't mind going more local 'david eden' 'swr' or 'trace elliot' but they're a little out of my price range, GK seemed to work out just fine, but i never thought about the proximity of their warehouse.
