: : I'm currently studying double bass classical style bass technique, but recently there's this huge urge (tumor?) welling inside of me to play something Deep, Grungy, and Hardcore. I'm looking to buy a 5-string electric bass for my purposes (doing away with the Yamaha single pickup beginner bass), but not quite ready (erm, finacially endowed) for top o' tha line. I do have some bass background including jazz and now some classical. Which brands/models would supply such a growl?

: I hope no-one gets too fed up with my Warwick adds but I think they sound the best. If nothing else I do think you should check them out. Then there's the Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe 5. For the Warwick I would specifically like to mension the Corvette model.

Ditto on the fed up thing, but Conklin groove tools rock for a factory bass, fives are pretty cheap
