I agree with Django. It's tough to find the right one, and yes finding a 5 under $1000 that I'm pleased with is tough. There are a lot to look at around the $350-$550 range, but none have really impressed me. Just try them all out in whatever stores you can find and this newsgroup will be a help too.

Question.....do you have any particular "musts"? For example, are you leaning toward tighter or wider spacing, or doesn't matter? Spacing is one of the first things I look at (I don't like it too narrow myself). Of course if it doesn't matter, that leaves more to look at.

: Good 5 string basses are a lot harder to find than 4 strings IMHO, especially under $1000. Lot of of time, the low B sounds like crap, or the neck width gets unwieldy.

: I would definitely field check any 5 string before buying to check out the tone and how it feels. If you have small hands, you may want to take that into consideration

: I have a Soundgear (Ibanez)5 string SR-405 which I am pretty pleased with. It was $550 plus tax.
