Can I damage tubes

I'm running my 6-string bass into a guitar preamp (Mesa/Boogie studio preamp), then into a usual (bass) amp. The sound is quite good but sometimes, especially at very low frequencies (open B) there is some noise (from the speaker). It sounds like a bell is ringing, but it's very quiet.
Is it possible that the guitar preamp's tubes can't handle these low frequencies? Can they be damaged? Or could the speaker cab's vibrations cause this noise?
Thanks!
Toby Meyer
