Melvin Hiscock (sp) has a book out called "Building an electric guitar" (or something like that). In it, he describes how to build an 8-string (doubled strings). I build one as my second project. It was a short scale (30") and fretless to boot but kicked ass on the sound! I put a built-in tuner to help keep things listen-able! The extra strings never posed any problem for me. I think that's my hands are pretty strong but others may not care for the extra tension. the sound is incredible... just playing single notes really fills up the band sound. Not that you'd want to fire the guitar player but you finally feel you are on even ground. Don't think they are just novelty items; John Entwhistle (of the Who) uses his to write his songs with. If you have s store that has one to try out, you just might fall in love with the sound as I did.
