: : Hello,

: : I posted my original question in a thread below where I talked about installing new replacement pickups in my Ibanez bass. After a little research and talking with EMG, I believe I'm settling on the EMG-40P pickups, mainly because they will fit into my bass without routing.

: : But I have one more question concerning this. I've noticed that many people install two different kinds of pickups in a bass for getting a variety of sound. My question is, currently my bass has the exact same pickups in both pickup spots (at least I believe it does) and I'm thinking of replacing both those pickups with the same EMG-40P. Can someone please explain why a bass requires two pickups? I'm assuming the placement of the pickup under the string will result in a different sound because I have a "pan" knob and I notice a difference between the front and back pickup sound. One is more trebly while the other is more bassy.

: : Any thoughts on installing the same type pickup in both pickup slots or should I be looking to put in two different types of pickups for a wider range of sounds. Maybe it is just personal preference, but I would be curious to see what you all think.

: : Thanks

: Each pick up is calibrated for the neck and or the bridge position, by blending between the 2, you should be able to get a wide variety of tones, especially if you have active electronics to go with them, however, the electronics are not crucial, but, would provide more tonal options. The EMG40P's are calibrated for the different positions, and would be a huge improvement over the stock pick ups you are using now, just make sure that when/if you replace them, that you pull out that rotten pre-amp(active electronics)that is in there now.

Thanks for the reply HUB! I have a question though... you said I should pull out the active electronics in it. Are you saying I should just get rid of them and make it a passive bass or are you saying I should replace the active electronics with something else? I'm new to all of this, bear with me! ;-)
