Topic: some encouragement

Someone once told me "Don't force what you are practicing into your live playing. Just practice, and let what you learn 'leak' into your playing." That is pretty much what has shown itself to be true for me. This last several months have been all at once incredible and incredibly frustrating. I currently play in a Rock band, a Jazz trio, and recently started rehearsing with a Jazz quartet for a recording project.. AND I am in a kicking Praise band that plays the Sunday morning services at my church. Along with all this I hold a day job, teach at a local music store on Saturdays - AND find time to practice! Oh- yeah - I take lessons from a local heavyweight (Adam Nitti) on Thursday nights. So with all this activity, and with all this practicing that goes with all this activity, I have been frustrated because I wasn't seeing the progress that I thought I should be seeing.... until this last two weeks. Seems like all of a sudden, and I do not know WHEN this happened, but I am starting to see and understand and more importantly PLAY correctly over jazz changes... and I have had a friend in a music school that I have met who just heard some of my recorded stuff and favorably compared my stuff to another player he respects... and my teacher Adam Nitti (just started with him... btw - his recordings are mostly Fusion - but don't be fooled. This guy is a monster player of ALL styles, and he knows his theory too) heard some of my stuff for the first time and liked it... and most importantly, my funk/rock drummer looked at me tonight after one of our songs and said I was "freer" than I have been in the past... I can't tell you how encouraging this has all been for me. The advice I was given (stated in the opening paragraph) is true - I am doing nothing consciously to force what I am getting from Carol K, Adam, and my personal chordal studies into my "live" playing. This last two weeks, it just somehow "showed up". Folks - keep chugging away - keep practicing... it WILL show up.
