About the hardest thing we, as a band, ever had to do was kick out our keyboard player who was also a life-long friend. We had been playing together since seventh or eigth grade and by the time we reached our twenties, our playing skills had greatly surpassed his. We really dragged our feet on the subject untill he metioned that he wanted to buy a pick up truck in order to help out with equipment. There was no easy way of telling him other than to say that we loved him as a person and tried to let him down as easy as we could. Breaking up with a girlfriend was easier than this! Well, this did not sit well with him and ten years later, he still holds a grudge. But, as a result of his departure, the band greatly improved and our skills advanced even further.
To answer your question:
If this guy is a friend of yours then no, there is no easy way to tell him BUT,it just may be the best move you make in regards to the band.
Best of luck,
