I used to have the same problem but I just wanted to be like Stanley Clark. The Alexi video is very good as well as the Bill Dickens but those are their techniques and that's what works for them. So take what helps you and work with that. I use the new Marcus Miller "Fat Beams" by DR, they're a little expensive but they last for ever. I used to have a Warwick Thumb V and it was fun to slap on. I found the best sound on that bass was either on the fret board or just below the last fret. I also do thumb work outs by just playing eighth and sixteenth notes with a metronome and I use the Budda Rope to mute the strings. This has helped in my stamina as well as allowing me to develop the Victor Wooten style of using the thumb on the up stroke as well.
That's my 2 cents. Good luck and a good teacher can do wonders for everyone's technique.
Keep it on the down low,
