: Okay, this might take a few minutes to read, sorry about that.
: I usually like to hold my bass around my belly area, in this position I can play any style with considerable ease, also allowing easier access to the top end of the fretboard. 'Cause of the way I hold my bass I use a leather strap (it is not very smooth, it is treated leather and is a bit furry). When I play punk stuff i'm always holding my bass low and I let it swing a little so I use a nylon strap which has very little grip or purchase on my shoulder and the strap slides back and forth. When i'm playing anything else i'm always holding my bass higher I use a leather strap was grips to the material of my shirt and doesn't move.
: The problem is that leather straps, whilst providing a good grip on my shoulder, are ruining my shirts. I bought a brand new, olive green quiksilver shirt for about 20 but in two weeks it was screwed. I only noticed yesterday that the area of my shirt that is touched by the strap has been worn down and has left a big mark on the material. Also, on the back there is a big red patch where a part of my strap has rubbed against my shirt and stained it. The collar of my shirt is also messed up, all the elastic has gone and the collar is a total wreck.

: I need a kind of strap that will hold well against my shoulder but not ruin my shirts. I like hard wearing leather straps and i've seen a few "liberty" straps that look nice, but I don't want to spend much money (i'm tight with my money, and i'm skint). I want a thick and wide strap that can be altered to be play your bass very high or very low. I've seen a strap made from bungee rope material that looked nice but I really need to know what kind of straps there are out there.
: Any suggestions? They would be greatly appreciated
: Thanks for reading this huge message

There are straps made of neoprene rubber (like wetsuits) that grip well, and also stretch enough to provide a little shock absorbsion. I've used one for years, they won't harm your shirt, are VERY comfortable, and they last forever. I still use one I bought 5 years ago, and after many, many gigs it still looks like new. They are a little pricey, but then so are leather ones.
