: Is there a difference? I'm pretty sure there is, but what is it?

Instrument cables are shielded (surrounded by a wire mesh tied to ground that prevents noise), while speaker cables aren't. They are NOT interchangable. If you use a speaker cable from your guitar to amp you will have tons of hum and noise. If you use a instrument cable from the amp to the speakers, you could potentially cause your amp to fail and need expensive repairs. If your cables look similar, make sure you mark the speaker cables so you can tell them apart.
