If you are getting your son lessons, you might want to take the bass to the instructor for their opinion. They can identify neck or electronic problems that might make the bass a bad choice.
If the JB doesnt work out, check out a cheap fender jazz bass. They can be purchased new for around 300-350 and are very decent instruments.
Plus, should the day come when you want to sell, the name recognition will help.
