: Switching over to pre/power amp/cabinet system, and need suggestions as to a good power amp, and how much power will be enough (using a demeter preamp, and eitehr a 1x15 cabinet, or demeters 3x10 cabinet). Mainly playing small to medium sized gigs. Looking at tubeworks 1160 power amp (160 watts rms, 80 a side, in stereo i guess. ) Any other suggestuions?

I know this is gong to sound strange but after almost 40 years of playing bass it is my firm convictio that the power of your sound comes from your hands on the srings of a good bass. I also believe that we (as bassists) rely too much on eq of the amp. I set me EQ flat but I have av=ctive instruments and an change the tonal content of my sound from there. If you for instance, use a lot f bass in your settings the speakers work too hard on sounds that are felt rather than heard and your sound gets lost

Have said this, I will state that I do gigs on an EA cvl-110 combo with 500wts if I use an extention cabinet. It feature one 10" with seperate mid and tweeter. It is a hifi system but it is only 20" square and weighs 64lbs.

I do believe you need a lot of power (more than the 160 you mentioned) to get modern sounds with a band with a drummer. The real trick is to use the power wisely once you have it.

PS I will be lurking if you have any comments that require further answers from me.

Have a great day.
