: Hi Lords of the board. That's the French bass player on the net. I'm in New York for little while and would like to know where the best music instrument stores are. Just to waste my brand new dollars on something useful on stage !! Thanx to all. Alex
Bon Jour, Alex. You absolutely must visit the famous 48th St. between 6th and 7th Avenues (closer to 7th)where you can find anything you want.(just about) Years ago there used to be about 10 or 12 independent shops on this street, now there's only about 5. Sam Ash has the lion's share of the block; instead of having a different department for guitars, basses, keyboards, drums, etc., they have a completely separate store! It's something to see. Directly across the street from the Sam Ash guitar store, you'll find Manny's Music, the shop where many rock musicians from the 60s and 70s bought their gear. Also worth checking out. At the end of the block near 7th Ave. you'll find Rudy's music stop. This is the place with mostly high end stuff: Pensa-Suhr, MTD, Alembic and a lot of others. While Sam Ash and Manny's are pretty liberal as far as letting you
play their guitars, Rudy's is a little more serious. Then, a short subway ride away on Bleeker St. is Matt Umanov Music, a medium size shop that has all the regulars, Fender, Gibson, Musicman, Ibanez and some very expensive stuff too. Well, thats about all I can think of for now. There are some other exclusive shops here in NYC, but, I never go into them. Why do I want to torture myself by looking at/playing something I can't afford.
Hope that helps. Enjoy your stay in New York.
P.S. Matt Umanov is on Bleeker St. about one block off 7th Avenue South
