: Just started playing bass in a band and am in the market for a good bass amp for stage and possibly studio. Playing an 82 Ibanez 924 musician, could anybody give some advice on what kind of amp to look for? I'm into vintage stuff and like the sounds of Paul's mid and later Beatles stuff. If anybody could recommend some stuff to look at, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Hey Paulsded, are you looking for a combo, or a rig?(head & bottom)
For Vintage tone, check out Ampeg, Ashdown and Fender. These are mainly American type tones; I'm not sure what Paul McCartney used towards the end of the Beatles. I think he used Marshall sometimes. Anyway, Ampeg and Ashdown have a very deep, warm type sound, and most people call that vintage. The new Fender Bassman series amps sound a lot like the Bassman amps of the 70s; Kind of right in the middle, warm, yet bright. These are the only ones I have experience with. In fact I just bought an Ampeg B100R combo amp, but, it hasn't been delivered yet. I've played through a few Ashdowns(many times) and to me they're just about tied with Ampeg. Their tone is similar, but, you'd have to hear them for your self. For some good user reviews of a lot of different amps and more, go to: www.harmonycentral.com After you get the home page, look for basses on the right hand side, then click on "more", when you get this page scroll dowm a little and look for the search box. Put in Ampeg, or whatever brand you want and a ton of reviews will appear. BTW, I have a 1979 Ibanez Musician 920.
