Here's my advice: don't ever give up on the stuff you listen to. Those bands/players are great examples to follow. The same ones I followed when i first started. Where does it get you? The awe of your bandmates, and a lot more say in the musical direction. However, the band i am currently in doesn't exactly play the style of music i would prefer, but they leave my part so wide open, that i can do 600 different styles and it still sounds great. However, i still like to tour the world with Rush and all them when i go home--so don't ever give up on those guys.
A small piece of advice that a lot of young guys aren't into. I don't know how much musical background you have, but you should become versed with all music ranges, i.e. take some music theory classes, or piano lessons or something. I started on piano at age 7, moved to trumpet, and then to bass. I also took a music theory class in high school. It all has helped me immensely, because most band mates just play, and don't know squat about the complexities of music.
Hope this helps--and most of all good luck!
