: I want something different, anybody have any experience with the Status Graphite replacement necks? El, would you recommend graphite? What can I expect to be different fron my Jazz necks. (Status neck same dimensions)....thanks.....John

Hey John what's up my friend!
Would I recommend graphite necks? Anyday! I haven´t tried Status necks, but my Modulus was made to match the specs of a 62' Jazz Bass, so it didn't feel like an alien when I first got it.
As I see it, there are two obvious advantages over woosen necks. One is objective and the other is subjective. The former is, of course, neck stability. With certain wooden necks, changes in humidity and/or temperature will make the neck bend too much. Most times, a simple truss rod and bridge saddle adjustment will do, but it was really driving me nuts, so in my case the neck stability is definitely a plus.
The latter really is subjective: now that I got used to it, I think graphite neck basses just sound plain better. As I told you, this is entirely subjective and I am aware some bassist just can't stand the sound of graphite basses, but I do believe the string-to-string balance is better and the overall sound is more focused all along the instrument's range. Yes, I know this could be due to a number of factors other than the neck material (pickups, circuitry, bass body wood, etc.), but I do believe graphite adds for a better sound overall.
Well, that's my $0.02. As always, buena suerte and keep your bass up front in the mix,

El Pájaro
