It kinda depends on what kind of a slap tone you want. Most of the tone you get (harsh, thick, high, low, whatever) comes from your plucking string, usually the D and G. I currently have a .045 for my G and a .065 for my D on my Roscoe basses, and I use D'Addario XL strings. I recently tried out a Fender Active Jazz Bass though, and I really liked the nice, think slap tone that it had. Part of it was probably because the bass itself was so heavy and dense, but I also noticed that the strings were slightly thicker than the ones I had on my Roscoe. I think the G might have been a .050 or somewhere in that neighborhood. Part of it might have been because they were new strings too.

Anything with the gauges of .130, .105, .085, .065, and .045 (for a five string), or anything in that area, should work fine.

Peace out,
