Very good points by both guys. When you are first looking at picking an instrument, you have to go with your instincts. Whatever you need to be happy is what you go with. If it's price, buy one you can afford. if it's looks, buy one you like the look of. Then, as you learn the instrument, and talk around, you learn what's better, etc. My first bass was bought because it was green and $400. it was a great bass to learn on--Ibanez SR400. I liked the style so much, I've got a fretless 400 and a new SR800. However, 10 years later I'm still learning about the instrument. Because I'm not making a living playing music, I couldn't justify spending $2000 on a bass, so I stuck with price and the sound, playability and looks that I like, not what everyone else likes. You gotta do what you want on this one, and that starts with playing a lot of different basses and finding one you like.
