: WARNING : THIS MESSAGE IS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED

: Something happened recently that has let me deeply traumatized and in the long term care of a shrink
: Has anyone else had an experience like this ?

: You walk into a music store, there's a nice selection of basses. Some rubbish stuff, but a lot of decent stuff too. All of a sudden you see a beautiful vintage p-bass, just begging to be played. You catch the eye of one of the staff and ask them to set it up for you. Eveything seems to be going fine. But. AAAAAAAARRGGHH, the guy has just wired up the mother of all basses, the mona lisa of basses.....to a tiny practice amp.

: How the hell are you supposed to be able to hear the quality of this bass through a 20 watt amp ? This amp is crap, it's the next model up from two empty cans with a peice of string between them.

: Then, when you ask them to put the bass through something better, they tell you that it's the best they have. AAAAAAAAARRGGHH !!!

: Sleep well, and don't have nightmares about p-basses and practice amps.

: Some people say that I should just let it go, but whenever I turn out the light all I see is practice amps. 20, 25, 30 watt amps. I wish I could make the voices stop. Someone help me......please........anyone?..........

Hey Adam,
Well, you certainly have a point there, but the situation you described as a curse may actually be a blessing in disguise. Before you start thinking I went completely nuts, let me state I agree with you: it would be nice if every music store had a top-notch Glokenklang amp ready to try every bass in the place.
However, trying a fine bass through a crappy little amp may be better than trying it trough a hi end amp, which may color the sound to the point you don't know wether the good sound is coming from the bass or the amp. Imagine an inverse scenario: trying a $200 bass trough a $3500 amp ...what would you think? what would that bass sound like when you take it home and play it trough a regular, "proletarian" amp?
It has always been my belief that the sound quality of a well made instrument should come through ANY amp. Of course, a hi fi amp will more likely help you appreciate the quality of the bass a lot better, but I believe you CAN get a realistc picture of the sound of a good bass trough a crappy amp by keeping its EQ section flat and a low volume.
Taht's my $0.02 on the subject. Buena suerte and keep your bass up front in the mix,

El Pájaro
