I totally agree with Mr. Locker on one important point... a well qualified PA wizard can make just about any system sound great. The secret to a great PA sound is more in the experience and ear of the operator. I've also found that in my case(s), if the sound guy/gal is a musician, he/she will better understand the mixes required. What you don't want is an operator that is partial to one instrument in the band and treats everyone else as second class band members. A good to high quality sound system is actually secondary to a good sound for the band as a whole. Jon's advise about contacting an expert at a sound system store is good. Money well spent. If you get the right person to work with, you might find that your sound system needs may not be as large as you may think. You may only have to know how to use what you have to its fullest extent possible. Only when you have maxed out your system and need more, would you have to move up.
Hope this helps rather thatn confuses.
