Spurious, how you been? Haven't seen you in a while--now I guess I know why.
Hmmm, sound is always a tricky subject. Everyone wants to be louder. You gave an interesting solution with the electronic drums etc. Unfortunately, I only know a little about sound, and to get quality sound, you need equipment! Looks like you're going to be better off investing in another car. Honestly, I'd say that depending on the arena, you'll have to play it by ear. In the small venues, maybe depending on amps is the way to go. You just have to make sure that everyone comes out equal. This may call for guitars on the sides, bass in the middle, drums in the middle. I would imagine if you plunk your bass amp in front of the drums (hopefully the drums are raised a bit so as not to block the bass drum), the drummer can hear you out the back of the amp. Then the guitarists can hear you too, and their sound is stereo. You really, really, really have to pay attention to levels though so your ship doesn't tilt.
As for vocals, get a vocal PA, so you can put one speaker on each side of the stage. That's a set up I used once and it seemed to work ok. I'm glad we didn't have a world tour with it, but it worked for the show.
For larger venues, maybe renting a PA system. Do you already have a board? May want to invest in that if you don't. Also, find a friend who wants to do the sound, and can learn the style of the band so he/she knows who needs to be heard.
It's a fairly tricky problem to fix. I've been lucky recently that all my shows have been ones with supplied PAs, and people to run the board, so all i had to do was plug in, get miked, and play.
I wish you the best of luck--i also hope you get some real advice and don't have to pay attention to mine!

See ya S
