: Hey guys,
: I was wondering about the availability of six- string fretless basses.
: I never see them around, at least in the stores in my city. I've always wanted one and I don't know about which brands I should look for and price range and where to find them.
: your help is deeply appreciated.

Hey, Quinn!

My first 6 string fretless was a Carvin ($400 used). My second was a Pedulla ($1200 used)- In retrospect, the Carvin was better. My current one is an MTD 635 ($3500 new) - sounds great!
You can find several stores in the back of Bass Player that sell 6 strings, but it's usually high-end stuff.

I'd recommend the Carvin - you can buy direct from them. Several of my student have Carvins and I've been very impressed (the quality is very high, and the prices are excellent). Whatever you look at, you'll want to be sure you get a separate midrange EQ (Bass and Treble are not enough); If you want to get that Jaco sound, you'll probably want to get get the fingerboard coated with epoxy.

Anyway, that's my experience - Hope you find it useful.

Good Luck,

Rob
