I haven't had the opportunity to pick up the deluxe jazz bass, but i have played the standards in stores. Although I do not own any fenders, I can tell you what I've heard. I've actually heard more about the P basses, so I may be way off here. The deluxe J should sound better because of the dual pups that cut down on the noise like you mentioned. Therefore, it should also offer you more tonal variety than the standard. This goes for any bass that has two pups as opposed to one. The basic advice I can give you is this: play both and determine from that. If necessary, haul your rig to the store or place of purchase and plug the basses into that to see what it will sound like if you put it through your stuff. I've always been a fan of more tonal variety than low end, so i'd go for the deluxe (that is, if i HAD to get a fender!).
I don't think i told you anything you didn't already know, but good luck.
