: Hi all.
: I am going to build a 5-string fretless bass. I 've been playing 4-string fretted basses for more than 15 years but this is my first fretless. Many bassists (including one of the top-three in Greece!) insist that I should ask for fretlines. But I have heard people saying that when you are *really* able to play you don't use them anyway!
: Any help will be appreciated.
My advise... get 'em! Sure, some may say you're not really playing fretless with lines, but I think they're just jealous that you've got guts enough to move up. You'll have the fretless sound you want and when you get your ear trained to play in tune, just think of the fret lines as a learning tool. When you move up to a true fretless, the others won't have a leg to stand on. Go for it! You won't regret it.
