I have a Carvin 5 string fretless w/lines. I use the lines when I need them, but I don't always need them. As I improve, I use them less and less. I think an unlined ebony fretboard is very nice to look at, but its the sound we are after, right? Otherwise, we might as well all be playing on MTV so we can "look" good!
If I am listening to a recording where the bass sounds great... do I care whether the bassists has lines or not on his bass... heck no!
If I'm at a club do I care... not really. I do have respect for players who don't use lines, but if the bass is sounding sweet, thats all that matters to me!
: Hi all.
: I am going to build a 5-string fretless bass. I 've been playing 4-string fretted basses for more than 15 years but this is my first fretless. Many bassists (including one of the top-three in Greece!) insist that I should ask for fretlines. But I have heard people saying that when you are *really* able to play you don't use them anyway!
: Any help will be appreciated.
